Poem:

I would hope that my own poetry will support me. It is nice to be in the habit of going to a special place in your own head. You have to be committed to the practice of being dead. Zeal and Passion is what is worth remembering. It is good to celebrate being empty. I am like a Taoist who instead of ego admires energy. I like to see it flowing. I get up early in hope of finding more. I sit on the floor next to the window so I can get some breeze. Energy comes by selfless service and cultivation. It has to be maintained. You can’t sit on your butt in front of a TV. In the evening you can meditate for an hour, walk for an hour and read for an hour. Flipping channels can damage your brain and puts someone external in charge. The souls needs frequent recharging or it just becomes mean. It is good to have solitude in your own room. Persons who don’t have it disturb others. This is covered in Thomas Merton. DS Poem September 12, 2018 New Seeds of Contemplation by Thomas Merton, chapter: Learn to be alone, page 80

Yes. The English paraphrase on the page (“If you are not handsome then be Jacob”) captures the basic idea, but some of the richness of Rumi’s Persian is hidden. The crucial verse is: تو که یوسف نیستی
