The focusrite scarlett 4i4
Yes. For your Scarlett 4i4 4th Gen, I would install the Focusrite software first, before doing the rest of the setup. In fact, Focusrite’s current setup procedure is designed around doing this.
The important point is: don’t download every piece of bundled music software yet. Do the Scarlett itself first.
I would do it in this order
Connect the Scarlett 4i4 to your Mac
USB-C from the Scarlett’s USB port to the Mac.
You don’t need to connect your keyboards yet.
Install Focusrite Control 2
This is the main Focusrite program you need.
On Mac, you do not need a separate driver; Focusrite says Focusrite Control 2 is what you install.
Download Focusrite Control 2 / Scarlett 4i4 software
Open Focusrite Control 2
It should recognize the 4i4 automatically.
Let it update the Scarlett’s firmware if it offers an update.
Don’t disconnect the Scarlett during the update.
Register the Scarlett
This is where you get access to the included software licenses.
Then install Ableton Live Lite
Your 4i4 includes Ableton Live Lite along with other software.
Since you already use Ableton Live 12 Lite, we should be careful about installing/activating another copy unnecessarily.
Finally connect your keyboards and speakers
KeyLab → Mac USB
Yamaha → Mac USB or MIDI
Scarlett → Mac USB
Scarlett outputs → your Peavey speakers
One especially important thing for you
Because you’re using the KeyLab 61 Mk3 and Yamaha P-125 as MIDI keyboards, I’d get the 4i4 completely working first, then add the keyboards one at a time. That will make troubleshooting much easier.
And the 4i4’s MIDI I/O is initially disabled in Easy Start mode; installing Focusrite Control 2 unlocks the full functionality, including MIDI.
If you want, I can walk you through the entire setup on your M3 MacBook step-by-step, starting with exactly what you should click on the Focusrite website, and then we’ll get your KeyLab + Yamaha + Ableton + Peavey speakers working together.
